Lionel Messi vomits while sitting on the Barcelona bench- proves to the world he is human after all

I don’t know who Lionel Messi is but he seems to be some soccer dude, and apparently he is mortal and can barf.

colbert-soccerMessi (who was only a sub) sitting on the bench during the first half of Barcelona’s match against Deportivo La Coruna. He’s sitting there, watching the game… when he starts to vomit.

Some of you might not think much of it. You might think the fact Messi came on later in the game and scored in a 4-0 win suggests this was just a strange, inconsequential moment.

However, this clip takes on a much bigger significance once you look at the considerable history of Messi puking.

Why does this keep happening? There are several theories, but the one offered by former Argentina head coach Alejandro Sabella might be the most revealing. “Nerves. I reckon that in these moments there is anxiety more than anything.”

Not something Messi probably wanted the world to hear, but if that’s true, it does prove a couple of things.

  1. The stress of being a football genius is far greater than many of us realize.
  2. Barcelona’s main man does have at least one human flaw which proves he is not a hi-tech footballing cyborg from the future.

Bridesmaid chokes to death on her own vomit after excessive drinking session at Chinese wedding

I thought it was only drummers that did that – Keith Moon, John Bonham.

A night of merriment ended in tragedy when a bridesmaid choked to death on her own vomit from drinking too much.

In a series of video clips, the 28-year-old woman is seen knocking back a glass of liquor with her male friends at a wedding banquet in Wenchang city, Hainan province.

She is then seen passed out and supported by her drinking companions.

After that, she is filmed being rolled away on a hotel baggage trolley.

The final video clip shows her in the hospital with doctors fighting to save her life by pumping on her chest but to no avail.

According to Shanghaiist, a lawyer said that revelers who encouraged her to drink bear some responsibility for her death.

Excessive drinking is common in China where the ability to out-drink peers and colleagues is seen as a marketable skill.

South Carolina sports fan splattered with vomit live on TV as half-time show gets gross

Baseball team the Charleston Riverdogs held a ribbon dancing contest between innings during a game on Thursday.

bull-durham-mv02It went well and one of the dancers was beaming as she strolled off the field, but then out of nowhere she vomited everywhere.

And just in case the fans watching at home missed it, the Riverdogs uploaded the gross-out footage to social media.

What made her ill remains unclear, but viewers have noted that the team runs a “Thirsty Thursdays” promotion.

Others have suggested that it was simply ball-park food combined with the sudden physicality of dancing.

Regardless, her unfortunate outburst is being used as a Twitter meme to express sudden disgust.

Some fans took issue with the minor-league team for sharing the video on social media.

However the fan herself, named Bonnie, joked on Twitter that she gave “all she’s got” for her team.

Dozens of Manhattan (the one in Kansas) high school students report nausea, vomiting

Last time I was at Manhattan High in beautiful downtown Manhattan, Kansas, I gave Bill Murray a don’t eat poop shirt.

bill.murray.dp_Before that, I was called in to help out with outbreaks that seemed to have more to do with lack of toilet paper and other hygienic basics, while school types told the kids it was their fault because they didn’t wash their hands. No tools, no job get done.

According to Samantha Foster of The Topeka Capital-Journal, state and Riley County health officials are investigating after dozens of Manhattan High School students were sent home from school this week with nausea and vomiting.

Jennifer Green, administrative director of the Riley County Health Department, said Friday that the high school informed the health department on Wednesday that more than a dozen students had been sent home with those symptoms since Monday.

At least 16 students were sent home between Monday and Thursday, and the school told the health department 19 students were either sent home Friday or had parents who reported to the school they were experiencing nausea and vomiting, Green said.

Gastro outbreak strikes Australia’s Fraser Coast

Australia’s Fraser Coast, including the town of Hervey Bay, is billed as Australia’s whale watching capital and the scallops are like no other, especially those apparently hepatitis A infected frozen scallops from the Philippines which has sickened 208 Hawaiians.

_DSC0022----Whalesong-with-Eliza Wheeler of the Fraser Coast Chronicle reports an outbreak of gastroenteritis has stricken dozens of people over the past week, inundating home doctors, and putting a strain on the region’s hospitals.

House Call Doctor’s Assistant Clinical Director Dr Ryan Harvey said this particularly aggressive bug had been making people sick across the state.

He said it appeared to be a far more virulent strain than in previous years.

“It is worse than what we have seen and causing worse illness. A lot of people who might otherwise have had an upset stomach are experiencing severe gastro,” Dr Harvey said.

He said there had been reports of a 15% increase in the number of people with gastroenteritis being admitted to hospitals.

Bug forces Australian women’s water polo team into quarantine on eve of Games

Amy and I are terrible swimmers.

Being good Aussies, Sorenne is developing into an excellent swimmer.

aust.water.polo.aug.16But she’s getting bored of doing laps for an hour.

We suggested water polo – they have a team at the local pool – and she was, Meh.

Now, perhaps our worlds have collided (or provided another reason to talk about microorganisms, as we did on our way home from school yesterday).

Four members of the Australian women’s water polo team have been segregated from their teammates after being floored by a virus.

In a disruptive setback to the Aussie Stingers medal hopes just four days out from the games, team management ushered the four players into building BV1 — which normally houses AOC and team officials — immediately after arriving in Rio on Monday afternoon.

The four picked up a bug while training in Rome in the lead-up to this week’s games.

Australian chef de mission Kitty Chiller said the four team members would not have any contact with their teammates until cleared by the team doctor.

People say they go to work, even when they shouldn’t

Rae Ellen Bichell of NPR writes that a majority of working adults say they still go to work when they have a cold or the flu. There are some jobs where doing that can have a big effect on health.

sea-sickness1At least half of people who work in very public places, like hospitals and restaurants, report going to work when they have a cold or the flu. Those were among the findings of a poll conducted by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

They are some of the last people you’d want to go to work sick, because they tend to have a lot of contact with people. And that helps spread disease.

“It’s one of the biggest food safety problems that there is, and we’ve known about it forever,” says Kirk Smith, who oversees foodborne outbreak investigations with the Minnesota Department of Health. But he says it’s really hard to get people to stop doing it.

When it comes to food handling, there’s one illness that’s particularly concerning: norovirus. “It is by far the most common cause of foodborne illness,” says Smith. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus is responsible for 35 percent of them.

That’s because there are billions of virus particles per gram in stool and vomit. It only takes about 20 of those to get someone sick. And norovirus can hitchhike from surface to surface. It takes a high concentration of bleach to kill it.

“And so it just takes microcontamination of your hands, if you don’t do a perfect job washing, to be able to contaminate food with enough of the virus to infect lots and lots of people,” says Smith.

The same virus has plagued restaurant customers across the country. Last winter, 140 people — including much of the Boston College basketball team — got sick from eating at a Chipotle in Boston where one person had gone to work sick.

“It’s definitely the norm to go into work sick. That’s what I and most of my co-workers usually do,” says Anthony Peeples. He used to work at an Olive Garden restaurant. Now he’s a bartender at a casino in Michigan City, Ind.

The CDC has found that 1 in 5 food service workers has reported working while sick with vomiting and diarrhea.

Don’t drive drunk: And don’t barf at Burger King drive through

A man reportedly threw up at a fast food restaurant late Wednesday night — but not because of the food.

burger.kingDavid Anthony Frieko, 32, of Clermont, was charged with DUI and resisting arrest after an employee at a Burger King in Clermont called police to report a driver in the drive-thru line had vomited in a vehicle, according to an arrest affidavit.

The man also paid $35 for an $8 order.

Police said when they responded to the State Road 50 restaurant at about 11:40 p.m., they found Frieko in the driver seat with his head down, his eyes bloodshot and glassy and his vehicle running. Officers say they smelled alcohol.

They had to pull Frieko out of the vehicle after he refused to exit, and he was unsteady on his feet.

Frieko reportedly refused sobriety tests and was arrested.
