100 sick: Outbreak at Gozo Malta’s old people’s home, sounds like Gozer from Ghostbusters

A considerable number of patients currently residing in Dar Sant Anna, the home for the elderly in Victoria, Gozo, are affected with some form of stomach bug, the Malta Independent has learnt.

This newspaper is informed that the security personnel at the residence were told not to let anyone inside because of the high risk of contagion.

It turns out that out of the 100 residents, some 80 were affected by the bug, which is causing patients to experience stomach pain, vomiting and fever.

In prison, back in the old days, kitchen staff were usually prisoners who knew how to smuggle out whatever sugar was necessary for some luxury wine (others call it pruno).

prunoBut as executive officer Simon Buttigieg told the Times of Malta, the whole kitchen staff at the Corradino Correctional Facility was replaced after a salmonella outbreak earlier this month.

An inspection by the health authorities concluded that hot summer temperatures and poor kitchen hygiene were behind the poisoning outbreak.

Mystery of kitchen’s ‘clean bill of health’ in Malta

St Vincent de Paul home for the elderly was “in constant breach” of health and food hygiene regulations and it was difficult to understand how it was given “a clean bill of health” in previous months, a report by the Institute for Tourism Studies has concluded.

St Vincent de Paul home for the elderlyThe report, extracts of which were seen by Times of Malta, also points out that the home for the elderly – the country’s largest – did not have a system to identify and control food safety hazards.

“In view of the fact that no HACCP [Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points or Security System] is in place… one fails to understand how the… kitchen was for the last few months given a clean bill of health,” according to the report, completed on May 30.

On Tuesday Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly Justyne Caruana announced that the kitchen would be closed down and rebuilt.
