Gypsum with your pudding? Trouble in Taipei

A New Taipei-based food company has been found to be illegally adding industrial gypsum powder to its beancurd puddings and to be storing herbal tea in recycled containers originally used for medical liquids, local health authorities said Saturday.

Lin Chin-fu, deputy commissioner of New Taipei’s Public Health Department, said the company’s products will immediately be recalled and sealed.

Industrial gypsum powder, which is commonly used in chemical engineering, is prohibited from being added to food products, the department noted.
