Just because we all eat doesn’t make us all experts: In Bakersfield California, a lot of people barf and a lot of it linked to unlicensed vendors

Kahtia Hall of Bakersfield Now reports the environmental health division of the Kern County Public Health Services Department is warning people to stop eating from food vendors that don’t have permits because of the health risks involved.

food-permit-poster_1469820642992_43356601_ver1-0_640_480Last year, Kern County saw close to 500 cases of food-borne illnesses, but there could be more since a lot of those go unreported. Officials with the Health Department say they can’t be sure that contaminated food or drink is the source of all these infections, but the conditions they have seen during inspections have the potential to make people sick.

Here’s a breakdown of the cases of food-borne illnesses last year in Kern County:

  • Campylobacteriosis: 303
  • Salmonellosis: 125
  • Shigellosis: 23
  • coli: 17 (including 7 E.coli O157)
  • Giardiasis: 14
  • Cryptosporidiosis: 5
  • Hepatitis A: 4
  • Listeriosis: 0

It is required by all mobile food vendors to get licensed by the Health Department if they want to sell food to the public.

Vendors are required to follow food handling and safety standards set by the California Retail Code. Included in this code is a list of food handling tips, including proper hand washing stations, hot and cold temperature controls, measures to prevent cross contamination, proper food storage and food handling training certification.

In addition to this, the Health Department looks at where the food is actually being prepared to make sure there are no unsanitary practices taking place before being sold to the public.

“When we go to some of the homes that are prepping the food, they are doing it in the backyard or garage. We are seeing really unsanitary conditions,” said Environmental Health Director Donna Fenton.

In order for a food vendor to become licensed, it needs to fill out an application form and pay a permit fee ranging from $115 to $650 a year. This all depends on the vehicle and how many inspections it is going to require throughout the year.

“If you are a produce vehicle, you get inspected one time a year. If you are a taco truck, it’s three times a year. Hot dog carts and coffee carts are twice a year, so we make sure that the way they are operated is done in a way that prevents food-borne illness,” said Fenton.

The Health Department also needs to see a restroom authorization form if the vendor is going to be at a location for a long period of time, as well as an itinerary of where it is going to be so the Health Department can inspect it on the field and make sure it is operating in a safe manner.

If approved, the mobile vehicle is stamped with a green sticker that says “County of Kern 2016-2017 Environmental Health Permit.” This green sticker should be placed on the upper left hand side of the mobile food vendor. This is how people can tell if a food vendor is selling legally.

“In Kern County, we currently have 500 permitted food vendors,” said Fenton.

Despite the requirements, there are some who choose not to get licensed and are still operating and selling food. In Kern County Ordinance, it is a misdemeanor violation to operate without a permit, subject up to a $2,000 fine.

Eyewitness News went out on a ride-along with the health inspectors as they went looking for unlicensed vendors. During the time spent with the inspectors, two fruit carts were found, along with a vendor selling honey. All three vendors were selling without a permit.

The fruit carts had gloves but no way to wash hands, and there were no restrooms nearby the carts. There were also no ways to wash cutting boards or knives at the carts.

Fruit carts are not permitted at all in Kern County, because the fruit cannot be stored at the right temperature. Another concern, is having no restrooms nearby, since a lot of the times these fruit vendors are selling in the middle of nowhere with no place to wash hands.

Vehicle inspection days are every Tuesday from 8-10 a.m. at the Kern County Public Health Services Department Environmental Health Division, 2700 M St., Ste. 300. For more information, call (661) 862-8740.

UK boy vomits on stranger’s handbag during flight – mum ordered to pay silly amount

I’d be a lousy surgeon.

I barf at the slightest provocation.

barfblog-tshirt-frontYet at other times I can completely keep it together.

Driving back from Florida, we were almost home and one of the kids barfed.

I lost it at the side of the road.

Yet another time, we flew back after a hurricane, and the kid lost it as we landed, I handled it like a pro, into the barf bag, off the plane and into the garbage.

Life is so uncertain..

Mumsnet user incognitoforonenight writes, “We were on a long haul flight and there was a lot of turbulence.”

“My son vomited everywhere halfway through flight. We cleared it all up. [An] hour later, the lady behind my seat says, ‘hope your son is OK, but he was sick and it’s on my handbag.'”

Naturally, both parents apologised to the lady. But it seems this wasn’t quite enough.

“She says, ‘no, it’s on my handbag, it’s very expensive and you need to get your insurance to pay for it to be repaired / cleaned.'”

The handbag in question was a Louis Vuitton worth £900.

The mum took photos of the bag, and added how the lady had in fact cleaned all the vomit off (which had pooled down to the floor). None remained on the bag. There was no visible damage.

However, the lady insisted “the smell was now ‘ingrained’ in the bag” and has since explained, via email, how Louis Vuitton cannot repair the bag – and the family are liable for a replacement.

Understandably, the mum has reservations.

“Surely, if you have a LV bag worth £900 you do not put it on the floor in an airplane, you’d put in the locker above your seat, especially if you are in an aisle seat

“We haven’t contacted our travel insurance yet, but thought I’d see what others thought. Should she have to contact her own travel insurance? I’m not sure what the ‘norm’ is in a situation like this.”

The responses have been overwhelmingly on the side of the mum.

Seek and ye shall find: Manila Sky Purple Yumm ice cream recalled over Listeria risk

AC Creamery Inc. of Anaheim, California, is recalling its “Manila Sky Purple Yumm Ice Cream” due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

manilasky-recall-110316The recalled product, which comes in a 16 ounce, paper cup, sports an expiration date of Mar 06, 2018, and was distributed nationwide in retail stores and events such as Florida Food & Lodging Show, Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture and California State University Pilipino American Student Association (CSUF PASA) Friendship Games.

The company initiated the recall after the FDA found samples positive for Listeria monocytogenes in the ice cream plant of contract manufacturer, Dr. Bob’s of Upland, LLC. Listeria has also been found in finished product of another company’s brand, following which Dr. Bob’s has recalled all ice cream products produced this year.

Consumers who are in possession of the affected product are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

And for those of you still trying to wake up at 2:47 am, this should help.

Over 1000 sickened with links to South African dairy

Malibongwe Dayimani of Dispatch Live reports a King William’s Town dairy that supplied a number of schools in the area with fermented milk, or amasi, was last week ordered to close.

161102dairy01maInnesfree Agriculture and Dairy was identified as a supplier of amasi to a number of schools in the area where over 1000 pupils from 12 schools fell sick after eating amasi and pap.

The dairy was told to shut after Buffalo City Metro’s health services found it to be in contravention of regulations relating to the sale of milk and dairy products which state that the selling of raw milk and raw sour milk for human consumption is prohibited.

In the compliance notice, which is in the Daily Dispatch’s possession, Innesfree was ordered to stop selling dairy products with immediate effect and dispose of any raw milk or raw sour milk.

Innesfree owner Sherene Fourie accused the provincial government of being on a “witch-hunt” and said she was being targeted unfairly.

Fourie said “most” of the schools where pupils fell ill were not on the list of schools supplied by her dairy.

Fourie said health inspectors were wrong to point fingers at her because schools and individual buyers fetched milk from her shop using their own containers. “Did they go to the schools to check if the containers were sterilised? Or whether the food they cook at school was prepared in a proper manner?”

Fourie said some schools bought milk from her and stored it in their own tanks and nobody knew if those tanks were sterilised.

There were hundreds of dairies in the province selling raw milk, she added. “I would like to know, am I the only one who is shut down or are they planning to shut down other businesses?”

Last week 1056 pupils from 11 schools were treated for diarrhoea in three provincial hospitals after eating sour milk and pap offered by the national school nutrition programme.

Food safety fairytales: With over 400 sick, Wahaca says ‘we have never had such an unprecedented incident’

Mark Selby and Thomasina Miers, the co-founders of Brit-Mex restaurant chain, Wahaca, write that last week a number of our staff and customers were struck down by what is suspected to be the winter vomiting bug, norovirus.

wahacaWe assessed each case and when it became clear they were not isolated incidents, we got in touch with relevant officials at Public Health England and Environmental Health Offices. In tandem with that, we took our own precautionary measures – voluntarily closing affected restaurants, carrying out anti-viral deep cleaning at all of our restaurants, whether affected or not, and ensuring that any staff member who had reported illness remained off site until their symptoms had ceased for at least 48 hours.

Our amazing teams have worked tirelessly to ensure that we have done everything within our power to limit any risk to our customers and team members, and the situation remains under control and we continue to work with all local authorities to monitor this closely.

The majority of our restaurants are open and we hope to reopen the 4 remaining sites, on a case by case basis, as soon as we feel we are ready to do so.

We are incredibly sorry that people have been unwell. In the 9 years since we first opened Wahaca we have never had such an unprecedented incident, and we are doing everything we can to get to the bottom of how this may have happened.

And monkeys may fly out of my butt.

Winning food awards isn’t the same as not serving poop.

Turkey holidaymakers hit with extreme vomiting at five-star resort leaving 11-week-old baby in hospital and man with kidney failure

Dozens of horrified holidaymakers have fallen seriously ill with a vomiting virus – that sounds more like Shiga toxin producing E. coli — after visiting a five-star holiday resort – including an 11-week old baby suffering severe dehydration and a man being hospitalised with kidney failure.

Overview

Overview

Over the past week The Sun has been inundated with calls from guests staying at the Liberty Lykia Hotel in Turkey throughout October claiming to have been affected by an “epidemic” sweeping the resort.

They’ve reported adults, kids and even babies projectile vomiting along pathways, in the swimming pool and in bushes – as well as many being unable to even leave their rooms after having been gripped by the sickness and diarrhoea bug.

Throughout October guests have been falling ill – but say staff at the hotel, and from Thomas Cook, have done nothing to stop it spreading and continue to deny there is a problem.

One guest, who arrived with another family on October 21 but have asked to remain anonymous, said her stepdaughter was “projectile vomiting” and suffering from diarrhoea within hours of getting to Turkey.

Within a few days four out of their group of six had been struck down with the bug.

The mum and others claim they were told they had to fork out 50 Euros to see the hotel doctor, or 100 Euros for the medic to visit them in their room.

She said: “They checked her pulse and said it was double what it should be and to call an ambulance for her straight away.

“They didn’t ask if we had insurance or an E111 or anything they just told us to bring our passports

“At the hospital they ran tests and put her on a drip, said she had a blood infection or something like gastroenteritis.

According to Thomas Cook it is “standard procedure” for customers to pay for a doctor’s visit and to claim the cost back through travel insurance.

Several families report having at least one family member being taken to hospital, while video footage shows young children being transported away by ambulance.

A safe food Halloween

No food safety dramas for us in Brisbane (unlike those at the cider mill in Kansas, more about that later), but thanks to our Alaskan hockey-playing friend Andy and his family for their annual party.

doug-andy-hockey-oct-16I decided to go as a hybrid of the two things hockey players hate most — a goaltender and a linesmen (now that I have my stripes) — while Andy opted for the more traditional Jason-approach.

About 400 sick: Vomit bug hits hundreds of UK Wahaca staff and customers, forcing it to shut nine restaurants

And this is why MasterChef sucks.

Hundreds of staff and diners at UK Mexican restaurant chain Wahaca have been struck down with suspected norovirus.

wahaca_carousel_1Public health chiefs tonight confirmed they had launched a national probe into the outbreak.

In total, 205 workers and 160 customers have fallen ill in vomiting bug cases linked to the popular restaurant chain.

Wahaca was founded by Thomasina Miers, who won MasterChef in 2005. It has 25 venues across the UK.

Nine of its restaurants across the UK were voluntarily shut down in the wake of the outbreak. Five have since reopened.

One of the restaurants affected was the chain’s branch in Canary Wharf, East London.

One diner struck down after visiting the venue said: “It was horrendous. I felt terrible. It took three days for me to recover.

“A friend I went with was ill on the Tube, they didn’t manage to make it home, it came on that quickly.”

A message to customers on the official website for the Canary Wharf restaurant today said: “We’re really sorry but due to unforeseen circumstances, we’ve had to close today.

“We hope to be open up again soon (and continue making money while you barf), please keep an eye here for updates.”

Public Health England has confirmed to the Daily Mirror that it had launched a major probe into the outbreak.

Puke and pee is gradually destroying the world’s tallest church

I first travelled to Germany in 1998 to give a talk.

My parents told me the Germans have no sense of humor, try to be Dr. Doug and not Doug.

german-church-peeI knew better.

The only response to my food safety one-liners was crickets.

In 2012 or so, I went to a U.S. military base in Germany, to give a talk about sprouts and the E. coli O104, and the 50 people dying and thousands sick and sourcing safe food and what could be done.

That sounds fairly terrible.

Yet all I really remember is that when I got off the train, I had to pee.

I’m getting older, urinary function is becoming more of a priority.

There were no public bathrooms, it cost money to piss anywhere inside, and the locals said, just piss wherever you want, no one cares.

(And don’t think you can just crawl under those toilet doors; they have reinforced steel, barriers down to the base, all so someone has to pay a buck – and I didn’t have any German currency and thought it would be rude to piss in the sink.

So I did it outside.

According to River Donaghey of Vice, a seemingly endless stream of drunk people’s urine is eroding the stone foundation of the world’s tallest church in the German city of Ulm, and no one quite knows how to stop it, CNN reports.

Late-night revelers already face a $109 fine if they’re caught emptying their bladders on the 531-foot-tall Ulm Minster church, but the monetary threat hasn’t thwarted drunken partiers drawn to the hulking piss-beacon.

The damage to the stone base of the church comes from the acids and salt in the pee, not to mention other bodily fluids drunk folks might leave behind, like puke.

“I’ve been keeping an eye on it for half a year now and, once again, it’s coated with urine and vomit,” the church’s head of maintenance, Michael Hilbert, told a local paper. “This is about preserving law and order.”

What law and order means in this case is probably just some Ulm city officials dishing out a few bucks for more public toilets or for city cops to up their ticketing. But the easiest solution may lie in the bottom of a few five-gallon buckets of that pee-proof paint.

BTW, Australia has the best public facilities I’ve ever seen.

It’s a f***ing island, of course they have to keep it clean.

Three children in India die after consuming meat cooked by mother on Diwali

It was Diwali and the Phulmali family simply wanted to put something special on the dinner table for their kids. But they had no idea that they had just served death to three of their children.

2phulmali-1As the kids — three boys and two girls — enjoyed a special dinner of chicken curry on Monday night, they discussed their plans to wear matching clothes the next day to celebrate Bhai Dooj. Instead, that very meal separated them forever.

The youngest three — Anil (8), Sairaj (6) and Dhanraj (4) – died of food poisoning yesterday, while the girls, Gauri (12) and Pooja (10), are still ill.
