Going public – to quash rumors, Winnebago style

The Winnebago County Health Department has put out a statement after becoming aware of rumors of a Hepatitis A outbreak at a local business, rumors which had apparently become so prevalent they felt the need to respond publicly.

Winnebago“If there was an outbreak of Hepatitis A, the Winnebago County Health Department would take the appropriate actions to prevent and contain the spread of the infection and would work with our media partners to help inform the public. The Winnebago County Health Department routinely monitors for the presence of communicable diseases on a daily and weekly basis,” said Winnebago County Health Department Administrator, Dr. Sandra Martell in a statement.

Eggs in the Middle-East: 25,000 eggs seized as Salmonella outbreak feared

Customs officials on Thursday seized two trucks that turned out to be carrying over 10,000 eggs – produced by “Palestinian chickens” and headed for Israeli market shelves.

eggs-for-sale-at-the-arab-market-of-jerusalems-old-city-in-israel-B1K785The eggs were confiscated and destroyed. Officials said that the eggs could be contaminated, and that they had not been properly inspected by agricultural authorities.

The eggs, officials said, were being targeted as fears of a major salmonella outbreak was likely.

The egg smugglers were residents of the northern Arab village of Majd al-Krum, aged in their 20s. The eggs were destined to be sold in the northern city of Karmiel. Police have opened an investigation into their smuggling activities.

In a second egg nabbing, Veterinary Service officials seized a large truck, usually used for carrying oil, that was found to be loaded with illegal eggs – 16,800 of them. The source of these eggs was not known, but they, too, did not pass inspection.

On Wednesday, the Health and Agricultural Ministries announced that they were increasing their supervision of fresh food in order to stem an onslaught of food poisoning caused by salmonella. Recent samplings showed that a new form of salmonella bacteria that had not been seen in Israel before was being detected in high amounts – with ten times more salmonella present than in the past.

While there has not yet been an uptick in the number of salmonella cases, officials said that it was just a matter of time before there was a major outbreak.

Officials urged Israelis to cook food thoroughly in order to avoid getting sick, and to buy only inspected products, including eggs, fruits, and vegetables.

New York confirm 5 cases of Hepatitis A linked to pizza joint and McDonald’s

Five known cases of Hepatitis A have surfaced in Seneca County, where health officials have diagnosed two food service workers with the illness in recent weeks.

mark's.pizzariaHealth department leaders say food service workers at a McDonald’s and a Mark’s Pizzeria in Waterloo were both diagnosed with Hepatitis A, and county-run vaccination clinics were held for people who may have eaten at the restaurants.

The last of those clinics is being held Thursday

‘We’ve never had anything like this before’ Flying Cock Salmonella sickens 20 at hipster pub in Brisbane

It’s an Aussie thing, eh. Just be cool, go surfing, hang 10, so what if people get sick.

the-flying-cockA public health investigation has been launched into the outbreak of food poisoning at a popular Brisbane pub after 20 customers fell ill after eating Australia’s most loved pub grub.

Queensland Health is investigating the case and believe the Fortitude Valley pub’s chicken, which was used last Wednesday in their parmigiana dish, is the source of the issue.

A spokesman for the Flying cock told the Courier Mail they had never encountered anything like this before.
‘Without being able to directly point the finger or throw anyone under the bus while this investigation is ongoing, we are comfortable and council is comfortable we haven’t missed anything and perhaps it is a problem with the supplier.’

The spokesman said the pub’s chicken supplier were creditable, however The Flying Cock has since cut ties with them.

‘We can’t find anything internally here which indicates there hasn’t been anything happen on our end.’
The Bar’s spokesman said they had contacted all of last Wednesday’s diners to check if they were all right.

Soft-serve a bitch to clean: Listeria linked to ice cream sickens 3rd victim — a year later

It was our most popular blog post for years.

bumpday_baskinrobbinsIn May, 2008, Baskin Robbins decided to offer free soft serve ice cream to expectant mothers on May 21, 2008, in California, Chicago, New York, Nashville, and El Paso, Texas. It’s apparently the beginning of a national roll-out of soft serve ice cream at Baskin Robbins.

I have no idea why they targeted expectant moms, or why they recruited a pregnant D- celebrity like Tori Spelling as spokesthingy.

Problem is, soft serve ice cream is on the Australian list of foods pregnant women should avoid. Sanitation with the equipment appears to be an on-going problem.

Today, JoNel Aleccia of The Seattle Times writes that a year after a giant recall of Snoqualmie ice cream tied to Listeria, a third illness has been blamed on the bug after it apparently lingered in a machine used to make milkshakes for hospital patients.

A woman in her 40s being treated at the University of Washington Medical Center was diagnosed in November with listeria. When experts did tests, to their surprise, they found the bacteria matched the genetic fingerprint of the germ that sickened two other UWMC patients in 2014.

The common factor? All three drank milkshakes made with ice cream from the same UWMC machine, said Dr. Jeff Duchin, health officer with Public Health — Seattle & King County.

“We’re assuming it’s linked to Snoqualmie ice cream from last year that persisted in the machine,” Duchin said. “The most likely explanation is it persisted in some nook or cranny somewhere where it escaped the cleaning process.”

The 2014 illnesses were traced to an ice-cream mix used by Snoqualmie Gourmet Ice Cream and sparked a voluntary recall of a year’s worth of ice cream, gelato and other products. The plant underwent extensive cleaning before reopening.

However, UWMC isn’t using Snoqualmie mix in their ice cream now. Instead, they use another commercial brand.

That means the listeria from the Snoqualmie mix likely remained inside the machine for more than a year, he said. UWMC cleaned and sanitized the equipment twice weekly, which is less often than recommended by manufacturers, health officials noted in a blog post.

Pregnant women, the elderly and others are urged to avoid foods such as lunchmeat and soft cheeses because of the risk of listeria. Soft-serve ice cream isn’t usually included on the list in the U.S., though officials in Australia and elsewhere warn pregnant women against consuming the treat.

The unusual outbreak at UWMC may underscore the need for more research into a link between listeria and the ice-cream machines, Duchin said.

In 2008, a reader asked if I would serve my then pregnant wife soft-serve ice cream.

No.

Why food safety risk messages from government are awful: Turkey edition

Want to know the cooking time for your turkey to ensure the best (and safest) results?

amy.turkey.oct.12This year it’s quick and simple. Just enter the weight of your turkey in the calculator, and it will calculate the correct cooking time to ensure your turkey is cooked to perfection.

Nothing is simple. Hooking up a modem is simpler than cooking a turkey.

Cooking instructions for the online calculator and SMS service cooking times

Our calculated turkey cooking times are for use in electric fan assisted ovens only. See below for guidance on cooking turkeys using other oven types.

Prior to serving, ensure your turkey is properly cooked – it should be piping hot all the way through with no pink meat left and the juices should run clear when the thickest part of the thigh and breast are pierced with a clean fork or skewer

If you are cooking a stuffed turkey, the centre of the stuffing should also be piping hot as this is the slowest part of a stuffed bird to cook

How many bureaucrats are employed to publish this drivel?

Use a tip-sensitive digital thermometer (thanks Ben and Katrina, latest batch arrived today, changing cooking procedures in Australia, one at a time).

Gotta walk the talk.

Fifth case of hep A from imported frozen berries in NZ

A fifth New Zealander is believed to have contracted hepatitis A after eating contaminated frozen berries in October.

berries.boozeThe case was confirmed by the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries on Wednesday, which says it is likely the person was infected after eating Fruzio Mixed Berries in late October.

Consumers have since been instructed to return or throw out the Fruzio brand of mixed berries (strawberries and blackberries), strawberries, blackberries, and three berry mix (blackberries, strawberries and blueberries) while the company has been forced to withdraw its product from shelves.

Ministry of Primary Industries director of plant food and environment Peter Thomson says the agency was alerted to the case on Tuesday.

“The person ate the berries in late October and reported symptoms at the beginning of this month. The person was briefly hospitalised for observation, but released the same day,” he said.

“The next step is to have the virus tested to see if it is the same strain as that in the four other hepatitis A cases.”

New York father-son duo stole chicken wings, resold for poultry sum

Two employees of a Syracuse restaurant are accused of stealing more than $40,000 in chicken wings and selling them to other restaurants and “on the street” for a poultry sum, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

chicken-wings-604mk112612-604-337-3f7d77f6Sheriff’s office spokesman Jon Seeber said Paul Rojek, 56, and Joshua Rojek, 33, of Syracuse, billed approximately $41,000 of chicken-wing orders to the Twin Trees Two restaurant’s business account between February and late November.

The father-son pair was employed there as cooks, Seeber said.

The pair would pick up the orders and re-sell them on the street or to other local establishments for a reduced price. They would later destroy and withhold the sales transactions receipts for those orders, Seeber said.

They’re facing charges including grand larceny.

Many oxymorons: ‘Deluxe’ Crayfish Soup with Saffron recalled

Lidl is recalling all batches and ‘best before’ dates of its ‘Deluxe’ Crayfish Soup with Saffron from stores in Northern Ireland as a precautionary measure because of the possible presence of Clostridium species. The safety of the product cannot be demonstrated.

crayfish.soupIf you have bought any of the above products, do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store where it was bought for a full refund.

If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product).

Food fraud: San Diego lobster edition

An investigation by the city attorney’s office has led to misdemeanor convictions against eight sushi restaurants whose “lobster rolls” apparently lacked a key ingredient.

Spongebob_and_larry_the_lobsterInvestigators bought the rolls at a sampling of restaurants and then sent them to a laboratory for DNA testing. The results revealed that less-expensive seafood, including crawfish or pollock, had been substituted for lobster.

“Every single one that was tested was found to be false,” said Kathryn Turner, chief deputy of the city attorney’s consumer and environmental protection unit. Consumers are “paying for a premium product. They should be getting a premium product.”

The “truth in menu” investigation was conducted in August and September 2014, outside the trapping season for California spiny lobster, which runs from October through March. Follow-up inspections were conducted by the city’s investigator and state Department of Fish and Wildlife.
