42 sick from Salmonella in Texas: Source remains elusive

In Dalhart, the Coon Memorial Hospital has seen all 42 confirmed cases of salmonella, 30 of which are coming from a common source, the Ten in Texas restaurant. However investigators are still looking into the exact origin of the bacteria.

salm.dalhartAs a result, the restaurant voluntarily shut down for one week. The building was cleaned and sanitized, and workers were re-tested for salmonella and on food safety. State test results show the Ten in Texas restaurant was clean.

While the owners would not talk with us on camera or let us into the kitchen, we were there as the dinner time crowd started to trickle in. Nearly everyone we spoke said the potential salmonella outbreak did not change their appetite.

“We ate salads, we ate everything else. I’ve been here before. We didn’t get it,” one customer told us. Another said he was glad it was back open.

But now there are new concerns, this time not in Dalhart, but nearly 60 miles south in Potter and Randall counties where 10 cases of salmonella have been confirmed in the last six weeks.  Four were found in students who live in Bushland, the other 6 were reported throughout Amarillo.
