Canadian Press is reporting that steaks sold at an Edmonton Costco store that have made people sick with suspected E. coli are from the XL Foods plant involved in an extensive recall of ground beef.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirms the steaks are from the Lakeside plant in Brooks, Alta.,that has been banned from exporting meat to the U.S.
CFIA spokesman Tim O’Connor says what isn’t clear yet is if the strip loin steaks sold under the Kirkland brand were tainted at the XL plant or somewhere else.
He says the steaks packaged earlier this month were sold at Costco’s 50th Street outlet.
The food inspection agency is working to determine if they were sold at other stores.
